Well, going to court would have most certainly been disatrous for Crowe, as a guilty finding may have prevented him from working or even entering into the States...so what's a guy to do? Settle the matter out of court and make a guy who got a bruised cheek a much, much richer man...$15m richer in fact.
That's it! I am no longer going to waste my precious money on lottery tickets...I've got a new plan...next time I see a celebrity out on the town I'm going to heckle him till I get beat up and can no longer walk, pray that there is CCTV around, and proceed to drag myself to the nearest police station.

Good grief!
Only in America! No wonder people are afraid to look at anyone, (God forbid) touch anyone, or speak to anyone in this, our beloved, America! I mean, get real people! I recently saw an "xtreme" news show which showed footage of Bjork,(everyone knows her, right?),strolling through a Taiwan airport, at the end of her exhausting world tour that noone knew about, and this wretched reporter had the audacity to say to her, "Welcome to Taiwan, Bjork!", at which time the singer, understandably enraged by this ambassador of goodwill, proceeded to beat the crap out of the reporter who was left on the ground, dazed and confused, wondering what the hell just happened. Did she sue? Was Bjork publicly flogged in the media? Did Bjork shell out millions to pay for the therapy, which this poor woman will undoubtedly need? No! The news footage showed Bjork, apparently after taking some sort of much needed medication, apologizing to the reporter, hugging her, and probably exchanging pen pal info. Everyone was all smiles and went about their business. She better be thanking her lucky stars she did not have her PMS breakdown in the US, or she would be some he/she's bitch in maximum security right now! Oh say, can you see?
oh puhleeze.
there is cctv footage from the hotel lobby showing crowe throwing his phone at the concierge wholly unprovoked.
if it costs him $15 mil, so be it. he brought this on himself with his horrible behavior.
eeeeerrrrr no thats not what happened!!!
The chick who was a reporter was hassling her son so bjork laid into her....
but yeah still wrong...naughty Russell and Bjork!
You have a point there anon 216...this matter would probably never have gone to court in another country...I think Russell beat the crap out of someone in Australia a couple of years ago and all he got were a couple of charges laid on him. I think this Nestor Estrada guy was clever though, because he had Russell in a tight spot...because if Russell can't work in the US he'd be in huge trouble...career would be over.

oh and one more thing re. bjork:
they've aired the footage a few times on those VH1 specials, and it's obvious that the reporter simply asked bjork something along the lines of how she feels to be in the country. she didn't go near bjork's son, nor did she address him in any way.
bjork just lost it, and later admitted as much and apologized to the reporter.
sorry to be a pedant!
Bjork (probably Bjork's publicist) said that she feared for her son's safety...that's what I always thought it had been...but now that I think about it, that was probably just spin-doctoring...
love,
elisa
According to the video, (Bjork Attacks!), found at ifilm.com, the reporter had been following her for four days, and wasn't even from Taiwan, but rather, Britain, if her record company can be believed.
